The 2009
Virginia Highlands festival celebrates 61 years of showcasing
the talents of the southern highlands of Virginia. Begun in
1948 by Robert Porterfield, the founder of the Barter Theatre,
the State Theater of Virginia, the 16 day Festival hosts a
Juried Arts & crafts fair with changing exhibitors, 12,000
square feet of antiques, performances and workshops by actors,
musicians, dancers, comics, storytellers, and living history
portrayals.. Area events include four plays in repertory at
Barters Main Stage and Stage-II, and traveling exhibits. Over
the years, the Virginia Highlands Festival has evolved into
one of the top 100 tourist events in North America and one of
